John D. Mitchell began playing piano at the age of four and began accompanying dance class at the age of 20 while a student at Webster College in St. Louis, MO. Mr. Mitchell went on to accompany for the dance program at the University of South Florida, in Tampa, before joining the School of Dance at Arizona State University. He has worked with many master teachers including Bill Evans, Viola Farber, Molissa Fenley, Laura Glenn, Joe Goode, Judith Jamison, Bella Lewiztky, John Malashock, Jennifer Muller, Milton Myers, John Parks, Jeff Slayton, and many more. Mitchell has composed over 50 scores for dance and theater that have been performed world-wide. John D. Mitchell is a founding member of Datura, an interdisciplinary performance ensemble, and Roosevelt Street Jazz, a jazz trio. Both groupls perform regularly in the greater Phoenix area. Mitchell currently teaches dance-media and creative practice courses in the School of Film, Dance, and Theater at Arizona State University.
